Suwandi has a medical condition known as Hydrocephalus. This is a medical condition where there is an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricles, or cavities, of the brain. This may cause increased intracranial pressure inside the skull and progressive enlargement of the head, convulsion, tunnel vision, and mental disability. Hydrocephalus can also cause death. Suwandi was diagnosed when he was 4 months old. He was 5 years old when we first handled his case.

Both Yahya and Suwandi are from a poor family background, so they weren’t able to seek proper medical help.

After successful fund raising events, we contacted several Indonesian LSM (Lembaga Masyarakat Indonesia) or NGO (Non Government Organisation). We were referred by our friend who is a doctor and has her own LSM, Lintas Budaya, to Obor Berkat Indonesia OBI (Obor Berkat Indonesia) who helped us get in touch with a specialist who was able to perform a surgery for Yahya.

After a successful procedure, Yahya is now a happy, healthy boy and can even go to school.

Unfortunately for Suwandi, because of his complications, a lot of doctors are very reluctant to help. Suwandi will need multiple surgeries and ongoing medical treatments. It will take a long time for him to get well and unfortunately this also means more funds.

We will need to find more funds to help little Suwandi. In the meantime, we have tried contacting local specialist in Indonesia and Australia to find as much information on how we can help with his medical conditions.

We managed to get in touch with an Australian organisation Romac (Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children) and had Suwandi registered in their database. We are still waiting for Suwandi’s most recent medical report before proceeding to the next step of getting him a proper medical assistance. Unfortunately, because he lives in a remote area in Indonesia, getting a medical report is not an easy task. We are still committed in helping Suwandi.
